The former Cap’n Fish’s motel buildings were demolished June 1 to make way for a waterfront park and public and commercial water access.

Boothbay Harbor Waterfront Preservation President Bob McKay said the demolition went smoothly and cleanup should be finished by June 3. Pine Tree Waste Services of Fairfield performed the demolition and removed the debris.

With demolition beginning at 7:15 a.m. and the last 100-ton truckload leaving at 7 p.m., the entire main building took six truckloads, said McKay. Demolition of the south building began early morning June 2 which McKay guessed would take an another two truckloads to remove.

Asked if anything interesting was found, McKay said workers found a large piece of machinery that used to pull ships up a railway onto shore. “The machinery still works and will be moved to another location on the park for display.”

Next steps for the park will be receiving preliminary approval, said McKay. He added, final approval would be ideal so BHWP can begin landscaping to create the park and work on the general store and duplex housing planned for the remaining building.
